    Witness Service

    The Citizens Advice Witness Service provides free and independent support for both prosecution and defence witnesses in every criminal court in England and Wales.

    Victim Support

    Victim Support give emotional and practical help to people who have been affected by crime in Hertfordshire. They’re an independent charity and you can contact them for support regardless of whether you’ve contacted the police, and no matter how long ago the crime took place.

    This Law Society search is designed to help you find a solicitor. You can narrow down your search by area of law, languages spoken, disabled access and whether they accept legal aid.

    RCJ Advice

    RCJ Advice is a unique Citizens Advice Service delivering free legal advice to people with a court case in the civil and family courts.

    RCJ Advice is not able to advise on criminal or probate matters or assist if you live outside of the UK.

    McKenzie Friends

    A McKenzie Friend is anyone who accompanies you to court to help you as a Litigant in Person – those who are unrepresented by a Solicitor or engage a barrister.

    Your McKenzie Friend is able to sit with you in the court and offer advice and support as well as taking notes to help you.

    Find a legal aid adviser

    This search provided by the Ministry of Justice allows you to find a solicitor, adviser or mediator with a legal aid contract.

    You should first check if your case is eligible for legal aid, and whether you meet the financial conditions.

    You can narrow down your search by area of law and/or by the type of organisation you are looking for.

    Civil Legal Advice

    You might be able to get free and confidential advice from Civil Legal Advice (CLA) as part of legal aid if you’re in England or Wales.

    If you’re eligible, you can get help from CLA for problems including:

    • debt, if your home is at risk
    • housing, if you’re homeless or at risk of being evicted
    • domestic abuse
    • separating from an abusive partner, when you’re making arrangements for children or sorting out money and property
    • a child being taken into care
    • special education needs
    • discrimination
    • some child abduction cases

      Our advice line is open 10am to 4pm, Monday to Friday.
