Pensioners across Watford could be missing out on payments to boost their income and access to the Winter Fuel Payment.
Citizens Advice Watford wants to raise awareness of the recent government announcement that only those receiving Pension Credit, or other means tested benefits, will now be eligible for the Winter Fuel Payment.
The deadline to apply for Pension Credit and still receive the Winter Fuel Payment is 21st December.
Figures show that Pension Credit is one of the most under-claimed benefits, with nearly 900,000 households across the country who have not yet claimed, including an estimated 1,000 in Watford.
Citizens Advice Watford advises that if you have reached state pension age and are on a low weekly income – below £218.15 for a single person or £332.95 for a couple – you should check to see if you are eligible to apply for Pension Credit. If your income is higher due to receiving severe disability or Carer’s Addition, you can still apply.
A successful application for Pension Credit will give you automatic eligibility for the Winter Fuel Payment of £300, a welcome bonus with fuel prices set to increase by 10%. Even if you’re only eligible for a small amount of Pension Credit, it’s still worth claiming as you may qualify for other benefits such as Council Tax Reduction or free NHS prescriptions.
Emma Burgham, Chief Officer at Citizens Advice Watford, said: “We are urging people not to delay in checking their eligibility for Pension Credit. Please help us spread the word with your family and friends. It’s critical that eligible pensioners don’t miss out on help with their energy bills this winter.”
